She Knew Not

A man talks to his broken heart while watching his life’s love in another man’s arms.

By Shayaan Khusro

O miserable heart of mine

Let me tell you of my lady love

She is a gentle being with a delicate touch

From wilted flowers to the most fragile glassware

She holds everything with great care

Never had she dropped or shattered anything once

Except that one time she held my heart.

But that’d be my mistake

For I never told her what she held

For I knew it not

Until I saw her give her heart away.

And when she spread her golden arms for another man

Is when you slipped from her hands and shattered

Unbeknownst to her.

I suppose I could tell her of my love

And hope she mends you with her delicate hands

And I know she would, even if it broke her heart.

So forgive her this one fault and forgive my silence,

I promise to hold you together with all my strength

No matter how much your jagged pieces hurt

Seeing her hold another man’s hands and saying the vows.

Perhaps it’s good that you are cracked,

Please bleed all the feelings for her I once had,

And perhaps with time the shattered pieces will come together

And I won’t need to hold you so firmly again

So until then bid farewell to my lady love’s

Loving and delicate embrace

And make do with my tight hold.
